Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in November
After a sensational October at the movies, November is shaping up to be just as good. The diversity of this month is crazy, as we get everything from zombie Nazi’s to Rocky Balboa, plus two recent Oscar winners following up their Oscar wins. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in November.
5 – OVERLORD (Julius Avery, November 9)
I saw Overlord at the 2018 Chicago International Film Festival and it was one of my favorite movies at this year’s festival. This was a film I saw towards the end of the festival when I was physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. But after seeing it, I was ready for another week of movies. I don’t want to get to into too much detail, as a full review will be coming out when the film comes out wide, but this is a wild, violent, fun ride that I can’t wait to take again.
4 – RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET (Phil Johnson and Rich Moore, November 21)
Wreck-It Ralph rules. Everything about that movie is great. The concept was original, the characters had depth, the themes were relevant, the animation was stunning, and it’s got as much heart as it does laughs. It’s one of my favorite animated movies of the 2010’s, so obviously a sequel will have me excited. I don’t know what’s in-store for this film, as Ralph (the great John C. Reilly) and Princess Venellope (a perfectly cast Sarah Silverman) leave the video-game world and enter the internet and all the chaos within. This could only be the better version of the Emoji Movie, but I have a feeling Disney will have something special here.
3 – IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (Barry Jenkis, November 30)
Barry Jenkins’ last film, Moonlight, is considered by many to be one of the finest movies of this decade. The film won a number Oscars, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay for Jenkins. Following this much success is tough for any director, but I think Jenkins is going to do it beautifully with If Beale Street Could Talk. This is a movie about a pregnant woman who desperately tries to prove her fiancés innocence as she carries their first child. Adapted from a James Baldwin novel, this movie looks absolutely gorgeous, and, much like Jenkins did with Moonlight, is sure to pull at the heartstrings and get a slew of great performances from the stellar cast. Chalk this one up as an Oscar favorite.
2 – CREED II (Steve Caple Jr., November 21)
Creed was my favorite movie of 2015. Director Ryan Coogler made a film that fit perfectly within the Rocky franchise, yet be its own movie and start its own franchise. It was also a star-making performance for Michael B. Jordan and gave Sylvester Stallone the best performance of his career. Unfortunately for Creed II, Coogler isn’t back behind the camera, which is really the reason it lands at number two on this list. I am ecstatic to see Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) back on screen and Florian Munteanu looks unreal as Drago’s son, Victor. The battles between Adonis and Victor are sure to be epic as hell, and the trailers promise more emotional weight in this film. Hopefully Caple Jr. does Coogler justice and gives us the Creed sequel we deserve.
1 – WIDOWS (Steve McQueen, November 16)
Like Overlord, I already saw Widows at this year’s Chicago International Film Festival, so I’m not going to say too much about the film, as a full review will be coming in time. But all you need to know is that Widows is one of the best movies of 2018. What Steve McQueen managed to create with this plot is nothing short of extraordinary. This is a simple plot about a group of women who take fate into their own hands after their husbands die during a robbery and are forced to do a job to cover their debt. The cast, led by the great Viola Davis, is incredible, and McQueen balances character development and action perfectly. Stay tuned for my full review on this one, but rest assure, this is one of 2018’s best and the very best movie coming out in November.
